From giving your puppy the best start, to learning new skills and activities, training is a great way to spend quality time with your dog, learn to understand one other and improve your bond. Well-structured training has the added bonus of leaving your dog mentally tired and relaxed.

I am a strong advocate for science based, humane training methods, which motivate behaviour change using a combination of prevention, management and the judicious giving and witholding of rewards. Painful physical corrections or tactics designed to frighten or intimidate will not be used. As an APDT UK member, I happily work within their ethos of kind, fair and effective training (see their Code of Ethics for more details).

Many of the things that might annoy us about our dogs, are normal dog behaviour eg. barking, biting, digging, chasing and stealing. I will help you to understand how your dog learns, and why he does the things he does, so that you can help your dog to behave well rather than be constantly occupied with telling him he is wrong (does your dog think his name is 'No'?).

Training is available for:

  • Polite greeting
  • Positions and stays (sit, down, stand)
  • Settle
  • Walking on a loose lead
  • Coming when called
  • Dropping items on request
  • Leaving items on request
  • Handling, including grooming, nail clipping, ear drops etc
  • Happily accepting equipment eg. a muzzle, a coat or a harness
  • Retrieving items
  • Go to bed or into a crate on request
  • and many more useful life skills

Puppy Life Skills Classes

Group classes are run under the banner of ‘Behave! Human and Dog Friendly Training’ at venues in London Colney, Arkley and Muswell Hill.

Our 7 week course is taught by qualified, experienced and enthusiastic canine behaviour specialists.  Class content is based on the University of Lincoln’s ‘Life Skills for Puppies’ syllabus and uses modern, reward based training methods, ensuring that learning is fun for everyone.

We cover all the basics and provide advice on normal puppy behaviours such as mouthing, chewing and toilet training.  In addition, lots of the training focuses on skills which will be useful in day to day life, teaching the puppies how to be well behaved as well as obedient.  For our puppy owners, we divulge all our best training tips and equip you with a useful understanding of canine body language and how dogs learn.

Classes are kept intentionally small to ensure plenty of individual attention.  The course consists of seven, 1 hour group classes, with weekly class notes, plus email or telephone support from your trainers throughout the course.  The best start for you and your puppy for £110.  Early booking is recommended, please email for details and a registration form.

Puppy Life Skills 1-2-1 Training

A puppy home visit will provide you with simple, effective and force-free techniques for managing all that comes with the joy of living with a new puppy. Covering socialisation; toilet training; chewing; puppy biting; stealing; crate training and more. Every puppy and home is different, so puppy visits are tailored to suit your particular situation.

It's never too early to introduce your pup to the learning game! Puppy training sessions are also available to give you a head start on skills such as attention; sit, down and stand; recall; leave; drop; loose lead walking and many more. Puppies soak up new experiences and learn new behaviours fast whether we train them or not - the trick is to ensure that they are learning the right things!

Initial 1-2-1 training sessions are £90 for 1 1/2 hours. Further sessions are £60 per hour, or £55 per hour for pre-paid block bookings of three sessions or more.

Adult Life Skills 1-2-1 Training

Training can help your dog to learn essential life skills at any age – you absolutely can teach an old dog new tricks! In 1-2-1 training sessions, I give owners the skills necessary to both train new behaviours and to maintain good behaviour long term, without compromising welfare or jeopardising their relationship.

There is no one size fits all solution for training – each dog is an individual and your dog's lifestyle, favourite motivators and breed specific drives will all be factored into the training plan.

Basic life skills training is particularly beneficial for the adult rescue dog, building confidence and helping dog and owner to understand and trust one another.

Pre-emptive training programmes can also be designed to prepare your dog for changes such as the arrival of a new baby or a new pet, or a change of circumstance such as an impending period of post-operative confinement, a change in their owner's mobility or a move to a different environment. Preparing your dog for these events can reduce the likelihood of behaviour problems developing.

Initial 1-2-1 training sessions are £90 for 1 1/2 hours. Further sessions are £60 per hour, or £55 per hour for pre-paid block bookings of three sessions or more.

Debbie and Chester
"Training with Helen was not only rewarding but her style made it also enjoyable and fun.  Helen is attentive to the needs of both dog and owner.  Whilst being a passionate dog lover she made me feel comfortable and gave me confidence with both my own and Chester's capability.  The reward based training helped my Hungarian Vizsla Chester immensely meaning he was happy and willing to understand and learn.  As a result I have a happy, obedient and well balanced dog"

Gail and Teddy
“My Border Collie, Teddy, had a terrible habit of jumping up and being generally too enthusiastic with people! Helen spent 90 minutes with me, introducing some basic but sound initiatives and a couple of marvellous suggestions, which have really helped me to train Teddy. Helen kept it simple but effective, which was key or I would have had trouble sticking to a plan! Teddy is a much more sociable dog now and I am a much happier owner!”
