Private Training

Why?

From giving your puppy the best start, to teaching your adult dog essential life skills, reward based training is a great way to spend quality time with your dog, learn to understand one other and improve your bond. Well-structured training has the added bonus of leaving your dog mentally tired and relaxed.

How?

I am a strong advocate for science based, humane training methods, which motivate behaviour change using a combination of prevention, management and the judicious giving and witholding of rewards. Painful physical corrections or tactics designed to frighten or intimidate will not be used. As an APDT UK member, I happily work within their ethos of kind, fair and effective training (see their Code of Ethics for more details).

Why Choose Me?

  • I am a fully qualified and accredited trainer and Clinical Animal Behaviourist (see the About Me page for more details)
  • I am recommended by vet practices across Hertfordshire and North London
  • I specialise in training pet dogs and puppies, and their humans, and have helped countless owners like you to achieve their training goals

What Does it Cost?

Fees for one off private training sessions are £80 per hour, and there are discounted rates for pre-paid packages of multiple sessions – because in my experience, regular coached, supported practice is the most enjoyable and effective way to get great results.

Adult Life Skills 1-2-1 Training

It is never too late to start training.  Each dog is an individual and my expertise lies in factoring your dog's lifestyle, favourite motivators and breed specific drives, as well as your priorities, into the training plan.

Reward led life skills training is particularly beneficial for the adult rescue dog, building confidence and helping dog and owner to understand and trust one another.

Pre-emptive training programmes can also be designed to prepare your dog for changes such as the arrival of a new baby or a new pet, or a change of circumstance such as an impending period of post-operative confinement, a change in their owner's mobility or a move to a different environment. Preparing your dog for these events can reduce the likelihood of behaviour problems developing.

I can help you to train:

  • Polite greeting
  • Positions and stays (sit, down, stand)
  • Settle and self-control
  • Walking on a loose lead
  • Coming when called
  • Dropping items on request
  • Leaving items on request

  • Handling eg. grooming, nail clipping etc
  • Accepting equipment eg. a coat or a harness
  • Fun skills such as retrieving and scentwork
  • Go to bed or into a crate on request
  • and many more useful life skills

Testimonials

Chester.jpg

Debbie and Chester
"Training with Helen was not only rewarding but her style made it also enjoyable and fun.  Helen is attentive to the needs of both dog and owner.  Whilst being a passionate dog lover she made me feel comfortable and gave me confidence with both my own and Chester's capability.  The reward based training helped my Hungarian Vizsla Chester immensely meaning he was happy and willing to understand and learn.  As a result I have a happy, obedient and well balanced dog"

Teddy

Gail and Teddy
“My Border Collie, Teddy, had a terrible habit of jumping up and being generally too enthusiastic with people! Helen spent 90 minutes with me, introducing some basic but sound initiatives and a couple of marvellous suggestions, which have really helped me to train Teddy. Helen kept it simple but effective, which was key or I would have had trouble sticking to a plan! Teddy is a much more sociable dog now and I am a much happier owner!”
